Mathurine des Bordes

Mathurine Desbordes was born around 1634 in Chagnolet (commune of Dompierre-sur-Mer) in Aunis (now part of Marans, Charente-Maritime), daughter of Jacques Desbordes and Marie Catureau.[1]

First Marriage with Pierre Guiberge

Mathurine Desbordes, resident of Chagnolet, signed a marriage contract on June 20, 1647, before notary André Roy in Marans, with Pierre Guiberge, son of Pierre Guiberge and Marie Chauveau, resident of L’Île-d’Elle (Vendée, 85111). The document specified that they were currently residing in Maillé, Vendée.[1:1]

Children from this marriage:

  1. Marie, died between July and September 1659 at sea
  2. Jeanne, born around 1656 in Marans; married Pierre Cabazier on July 23, 1669, in Montreal (Notre-Dame); buried December 3, 1728, in Montreal[1:2][2][3]

In 1659, Jeanne Mance was in France recruiting for Montreal. Pierre Guiberge, his wife Mathurine Desbordes, and their two daughters were among those recruited. They had to borrow money from Ms. Mance to survive and embark. The ship was the Saint-André.

Cost breakdown for various families:

  • Olivier Charbonneau, his wife and daughter: 175 Livres
  • Simon Cardinault, his wife and 2 children: 225 Livres
  • Pierre Goyer (Goguet), his wife and 1 daughter: 175 Livres
  • Jean Roy and his wife: 150 Livres
  • Mathurin Thibaudeau, his wife and 4 children: 350 Livres
  • Jean Racaud, his wife and 3 children: 275 Livres
  • Pierre Guiberge, his wife and 2 children: 225 Livres
  • Elie Beaujean, his wife and 2 children: 225 Livres

It wasn’t until 1669 that many of them finished repaying Jeanne Mance, receiving a receipt from her before notary Bénigne Basset.[4]

The Saint-André departed from La Rochelle in July 1659. For two years prior, it had served as a hospital for marine troops but had not been disinfected in any way. There were approximately 18 deaths from disease during the voyage because of this. The journey lasted 2 months, with multiple storms slowing the voyage. The ship finally arrived off Quebec on September 7, 1659, with many passengers ill. It was finally on September 29 that Marguerite Bourgeoys, who was also on the voyage, arrived in Montreal with the recruits who were able to make it there.[4:1]

Pierre Guiberge and his daughter Marie died at sea during the crossing between July 2 and September 7, 1659.[4:2]

Mathurine Desbordes lived in Canada, New France.

Second Marriage with Pierre Bissonnet

Marriage contract of Pierre Bissonnet and Mathurine DesBordes (April 24, 1660). Notary Bénigne Basset Vol I pg 170[5]

On May 3, 1660, at Notre-Dame de Montréal, Pierre Bessonnet, miller, son of Jacques Bessonnet and Guillemette Debien, married Mathurine Desbordes, widow of Pierre Guiberge, in the presence of Jacques Archambault and Michel Louvard, with the parish priest of Montreal Gabriel Souart officiating.[6]

Child from this marriage:

  1. Jacques Bessonnet, baptized April 28, 1661, in Montreal (Notre-Dame); officially declared illegitimate when it was discovered that his father still had a living wife in France. He married Perrine Lepelé on January 22, 1691, in Trois-Rivières.[3:1]

Gabriel Souart, with the permission of the Bishop of Petraea, declared the marriage null on August 1, 1663, on the grounds that the said Bessonnet had a wife in France[6:1] (who would be Marie Allaire).

Third Marriage with Michel Bouvier

Marriage contract of Michel Bouvier and Mathurine Desbordes (July 30, 1663). Notary Bénigne Basset Vol I pg 178[5:1]

On August 16, 1663, at Notre-Dame de Montréal, the marriage of Michel Bouvier, son of the late Louis and Anne Darondeau, his father and mother from the city of La Flèche, with Mathurine des Bordes, widow of the late Pierre Guiberge and since married in the Church in this parish on May 3, 1660, to one Pierre Bessonnet, said marriage having been declared null by sentence of the Official of Monseigneur the Bishop of Petraea because the said Pierre Bessonnet had at that time a living wife in France & with permission to the said Mathurine des Bordes to marry whomever she pleased, which has been done today. The three banns having been published beforehand without opposition, the marriage was performed in the presence of François Bailly, Urbain Brossard, Gilles Lozon, Honoré l’Anglois, and several other inhabitants of this place, common friends of the parties who declared they did not know how to write or sign. (signatures): F Bailly, U Brossard, Gillin Lauson, honoré langlois, G Souart, curé.[7]

Children from this marriage:

  1. Suzanne Bouvier, baptized June 24, 1664, Montreal (Notre-Dame); married Louis Brien on April 16, 1681, Montreal (Notre-Dame)

Notes

Mathurine Desbordes was formerly listed among the Filles à Marier (Marriageable Girls), but has been removed from that listing. She was neither single nor widowed when she left France; she was accompanied by her husband and 2 daughters. Her husband and one daughter died at sea during the trip. She eventually remarried in New France. The women usually counted among the Filles à Marier were either single or already widowed before boarding a ship to migrate.
