Marie Rocheron

Marie Rocheron was baptized on April 21, 1639, in Saint-Cosme-de-Vair (now Saint-Cosme-au-Vairais), Perche, France. She was the daughter of Julien Rocheron and Martine Lemoyne, and her godparents were Marin Fortin and Marie Le Sallier. [1, 8, 9, 10] Marie migrated to New France in 1657, accompanied or followed by her brothers Gervais and Simon. [6, 11]

François Gaulin

François Gaulin was baptized on August 25, 1630, in Saint-Martin-du-Vieux-Bellême, Perche, France. He was the son of Vincent Gaulin and Marie Bonnemer, and his godparents were François Huet and Marie Boucher. [11, 12, 13, 14, 15] François migrated to New France around 1652. His sister Marguerite and brother Pierre also emigrated to New France. [16, 17] He worked as a servant for Louis d’Ailleboust and also as a manual laborer. [11, 18]

Marriage and Family

On August 19, 1657, Marie Rocheron and François Gaulin entered into a marriage contract before notary Claude Aubert. On September 25, 1657, they were married in Quebec City. [8, 11, 18] Neither spouse could sign the marriage contract.

Marie and François had 11 children:

  • Joseph (1676-) [22]

The family settled on Île d’Orléans. Census records from 1666, 1667, and 1681 provide details about their household:

  • 1666: François Gauslin, 35; Marie Rochon, 28; Louis, 8; Simon, 4; Pierre, 3; Marie-Magdelaine, 1. [12, 19]
  • 1667: François Golin, 35; Marie Rochon (Rochereau?); 28; Louis, 9; Simon, 6; Pierre, 4; Madeleine, 2; François, 15 months; 6 livestock, 20 arpents of land. [12, 20]
  • 1681: Marie Rocheron (widow), 42; children: Simon, 20; Pierre, 19; Madeleine, 17; François, 14; Robert, 12; Thérèse, 10; Antoine, 8; Joseph, 5; 1 firearm; 14 livestock; 20 arpents of land. [13]

Later Life and Death

François Gaulin died on December 8, 1675, and was buried on December 9, 1675, in Sainte-Famille, Île d’Orléans. [11, 18] Marie Rocheron died on December 20, 1687, in Sainte-Famille, Île d’Orléans. [8] It is believed that Marie and some of her children where victims of a smallpox epidemic.

Marie Rocheron and François Gaulin had 71 descendants by 1729. [14, 21]
