Original name: Orgueille (variations: Orgueil, Orcüeil)

Biography

Born in Bordeaux (Ste-Croix parish), Guyenne (Gironde), on June 14, 1634, and baptized the following day. Daughter of Pierre Orgueille and Marie Bruelle. Godparents: Claude __ (illegible) and Marie Frugeau.12

She arrived in Montreal on November 16, 1653, as part of The Great Recruitment (La Grande Recrue).34

Marriage

On November 23, 1654, Marie married Toussaint Hunault dit Deschamps in Montreal. The marriage was officiated by Jesuit priest Claude Pijart. Witnesses included Paul de Chomedey and Gilbert Barbier.56 Neither spouse could sign their names.7

  • Françoise Hunaut – Baptized December 5, 1667; married Nicolas Joly (1681).
  • Toussaint Hunaut – Baptized May 1, 1671; died April 23, 1673 (age 2).
  • Toussaint Hunaut – Baptized August 25, 1673; married Étiennette Paquet (1691), Isabelle Baudereau (1717), and Marie Augé (1727).

Death

Marie died on November 29, 1700, at her son’s home on Ste-Thérèse Island and was buried in Varennes.12 Her husband Toussaint was murdered in 1690, leaving her to manage significant debts.13

Biography

Born circa 1625 in Saint-Pierre-es-Champs, Beauvais, Picardy, France. Son of Nicolas Hunault and Marie Benoist.14 He arrived in Montreal on November 16, 1653, as part of The Great Recruitment.15

Land Transactions

  • Received a 30-arpent land grant on Saint-Louis Hill in 1654; sold it in 1665.16
  • Acquired land on the St-François coast and later the St-Dominique coast through multiple transactions (1683–1687).17

Death

Murdered on September 13, 1690, by Lieutenant Gabriel Dumont de Blaignac. His burial record remains undiscovered.18

Notarial Acts (Translated)

  • 1665: Sold 30-arpent land to Pierre Chauvin.19
  • 1688–1689: Multiple land sales, obligations, and leases involving sons André and Michel Desrosiers.20
  • 1690: Family transferred legal rights to Charles de Couagne to sue Toussaint’s murderer.21
