Marie-Anne Hardy & Pierre Mallet
Marie-Anne Hardy and Pierre Mallet
Origins and Early Life
Marie-Anne Hardy was born on October 10, 1633[1] in the Parish of La Trinité, Angers, Anjou (now Maine-et-Loire), France. She was the daughter of René Hardy, a merchant and master goldsmith, and Renée Noget (also spelled Mauget or Moget)[2].
Pierre Mallet (also spelled Maillet or Malet, sometimes called Malichon) was baptized on July 1, 1629[3] in Saint-Coulomb (Saint-Colomban), Diocese of Dol, Brittany (now Ille-et-Vilaine), France. He was the son of Jean Mallet (or Malet) and Guillemette Ruellan (also spelled Rualand)[4].
Immigration to New France
Pierre Mallet is first recorded in New France on March 6, 1660, when he was present at a marriage contract signing, indicating he arrived in 1659 or earlier[5]. He worked as a plowman.
Marie-Anne Hardy came to New France in 1662 as a “Filles à Marier” (marriageable girl), contracted to be Pierre Mallet’s bride[6].
Marriage
Pierre Mallet and Marie-Anne Hardy signed a marriage contract on July 9, 1662, before notary Bénigne Basset. At this time, both of their fathers were noted as deceased[7]. Marie-Anne signed the contract, but Pierre could not write and did not sign.
The marriage was solemnized on October 23, 1662, at Notre-Dame de Montréal. The ceremony was witnessed by Jacques Picot, Nicolas Godé, and Pierre Peras (friends of Pierre Mallet), as well as Zacharie Du Puy (Major), Gilbert Barbier (master carpenter), Julien de Rouvray (soldier), and several other common friends of both parties. Marie-Anne brought a dowry worth 500 livres to the marriage[8].
Children
Pierre and Marie-Anne had six children:
-
Marie-Geneviève Mallet, baptized October 2, 1663, in Montréal[9]. She married Jean Legras on November 8, 1667, in Montréal[10].
-
Anne Malet, baptized February 20, 1666, in Montréal[11]. She married Louis Ducharme on November 27, 1681, in Montréal[12]. After becoming a widow, she remarried Louis Préjan dit l’Oeillet on January 18, 1698, in Montréal[13].
-
René Mallet, baptized February 24, 1668, in Montréal[14]. He married Marie Lescuier on October 17, 1689, in Montréal[15].
-
Jean Mallet, baptized April 17, 1670, in Montréal[16].
-
Louis Malet, baptized February 8, 1673, in Montréal[17]. He married Jeanne Brunet on October 29, 1697, in Lachine[18].
-
Pierre Malet, baptized February 16, 1676, in Montréal[19]. He married Madeleine Dufresne on January 9, 1698, in Montréal[20].
All four sons became “engagés Ouest” (contracted workers in the western territories).

1666 Census of Montréal: Pierre Mallet, 35, habitant; Marie Hardy, 32, his wife; Marie, 2.[21]
1667 Census of Île de Montréal: Pierre Malet (Maillet), 35; Marie-Anne Hardy, his wife, 32; Geneviève, 4; Anne, 15 months; 3 livestock, 15 arpents developed.[22]
1681 Census of Montréal: Pierre Mallet, 60; Anne Hardy, his wife, 42; children: Anne, 16; René, 13; Jean, 11; Louis, 9; Pierre, 6; 1 gun; 10 horned beasts; 20 arpents developed.[23]
Later Life and Legal Documents
On November 18, 1695, Marie-Anne Hardy made her testament before notary Bénigne Basset. She requested to be buried in the Récollets church in the city, donated money for the decoration of their chapel, and named her son-in-law Jean Legras as executor. She signed as “Marie Anne Hardy Mallet,” with notary Claude Maugue as witness.[24]
On October 4, 1696, Marie-Anne signed a note promising to pay her daughter Anne Mallet “twenty ells of hemp cloth, for some sheets, tablecloths, and napkins that she gave me, coming from the inventory of her deceased husband.”[25]
On November 10, 1696, she hired Catherine Glory for forty livres for one year, with François Dormet dit Lalande, Catherine’s brother-in-law, acting on her behalf.[26]
In 1703-1704, Marie-Anne was a witness in a legal proceeding initiated by Louise de Xaintes. She was noted as being 70 years old at that time.[27]
In 1710, Marie-Anne made a statement in a civil case involving her son Pierre Mallet and his wife Madeleine Thunay, stating that the nuns had advanced 200 livres the week before her husband’s death to pay for his burial.[28]
On June 13, 1710, Marie-Anne Hardy, as widow of Pierre Mallet, deposited 50 livres at the registry of the Royal Jurisdiction of Montréal for a fine owed by her son René Mallet following a judgment of May 30, despite his appeal to the Sovereign Council.[29]
On May 14, 1723, her son Pierre made a request regarding the management of the assets of the community of his deceased father and his mother Marie-Anne Hardy, the latter being of an advanced age at that time. He wanted to sell a building belonging to the estate.[30]
Between May 11 and December 10, 1723, a legal process took place for the licitation (judicial sale) of a lot located on Saint-Vincent Street belonging to the estate of Pierre Mallet, husband of Marie-Anne Hardy.[31]
Deaths
The exact date of Pierre Mallet’s death is unknown. He was still alive on February 4, 1699, when he witnessed the marriage of Michel Pénin dit Fontaine in Montréal[32]. Court documents indicate he was still alive during an inquiry that lasted from June 3, 1703, to April 4, 1704, as Marie-Anne was referred to as “his wife” and not “his widow”[33]. Documents suggest he died shortly after July 18, 1704, when he and Marie-Anne made a sale to the nuns[34]. By July 25, 1707, Marie-Anne is referred to as the “widow of Pierre Mallet”[35]. No burial record has been identified for him.
Marie-Anne Hardy died in Lachine and was buried on January 2, 1726, in the cemetery near the church of Montréal. Her burial record states she was 94 years old (though this appears to be an exaggeration based on her baptismal date).[36]
