Jacques Guyon & Marie Huet

Introduction

According to “One Hundred French Canadian Family Histories” by Phillip J. Moore, most people of French Canadian heritage descend from the Guyon family of old Perche. Jacques Guyon is the earliest Guyon documented as an ancestor to many French Canadians. He witnessed a document in Tourouvre on Monday, January 6, 1579, and died before September 29, 1623. He and his wife Marie Huet married before 1583 and had at least two children: Marie (born 1588) and Jean (born 1592). Historical records indicate that Jacques was unable to sign his name.

Jacques GUYON (mid-16th century – before 1624)

Parents

His parents are unknown. Despite previous genealogical connections to Mathurin Guyon and Madeleine Aymard, there is NO evidence supporting this lineage, and Jacques has been detached from these previously claimed parents in genealogical records.[1]

Birth

Jacques Guyon was born in France in the mid-16th century. The exact location of his birth is unknown, other than it was somewhere in France.[2][3]

Marriage

Jacques Guyon married Marie Huet before April 15, 1583, in Mortagne-au-Perche in the parish of Saint-Jean and Saint-Malo in the diocese of Séez.[4] Mortagne is now known as the French commune of Mortagne-au-Perche (INSEE 61016) located in the Mortagne-au-Perche arrondissement, Orne département, in the Normandy region.

Known Children with Marie Huet

  • Jean Guyon, sieur du Buisson (1592-1663)[5][6]
  • Marie Guyon (born 1588) – mentioned in the introduction

Death

Jacques died before November 29 or September 29, 1623, probably in Tourouvre-au-Perche.[2:1][7] The September 29, 1623 date is mentioned in an article on the family, noting it as the date when his son Jean sold the family house at Tourouvre, having previously buried his father.[8]

Additional Information

Jacques Guyon was named among the notables of the town on November 21, 1604.[2:2] The earliest documented trace of Jacques and Marie is a mutual donation to the last survivor dated April 15, 1583.[2:3]

Marie HUET (mid-16th century – 1626)

Parents

Marie’s parentage is disputed in the sources. Some sources claim she was the daughter of Guillaume Eustache Huet and Madeleine Agnùs Avrard.[9] However, research notes indicate there is no evidence for this parentage, suggesting this may be a conflation with her son Jean’s wife’s parents. Marie Huet’s son Jean married Mathurine Robin, whose parents were Eustache Robin and Mathurine Avrard.[10]

Birth

Marie Huet was born in France around the mid-16th century, possibly around 1562 according to some sources, though this date is not well-documented.[11][3:1]

Marriage

Marie Huet married the Royal Surveyor Jacques Guyon on April 15, 1583, at Mortagne in the Saint-Jean and Saint-Malo parish of the Séez diocese.[4:1][12]

Death

Marie Huet was buried at Mortagne in the Saint-Jean and Saint-Malo parish on February 26, 1626.[13][4:2][2:4]

Children

As noted above, Marie Huet and Jacques Guyon had at least two known children:

  • Jean Guyon, sieur du Buisson (1592-1663)[14][15]
  • Marie Guyon (born 1588)

Research Notes

The parish registers of Saint-Aubin Church in Tourouvre in the Perche region begin on July 16, 1588.[2:5]

The April 15, 1583 date mentioned regarding a mutual donation is in conflict with the marriage date from the Fichier Origine records. This raises questions about whether the marriage of Jacques Guyon and Marie Huet took place before April 15, 1583, and whether the religious act for this marriage exists in records.[2:6]

Regarding Marie Huet’s parentage, research suggests Eustache would actually be named Jacques Huet, who was married to Madeleine Avrard. They had a son named Eustache baptized on September 9, 1601, in St-Jean-de-Mortgagne according to Prefen notice by Danielle Liard (Note: Prefen is no longer accessible as the program was terminated).[10:1]

Historical Context

The Guyon family’s connection to French Canadian heritage comes through their son Jean Guyon du Buisson, who emigrated to Canada. Jean Guyon became a significant ancestor for many French Canadian families, with numerous descendants throughout North America today.
