Dictionnaire Genealogique des Familles Canadiennes- Cyprien Tanguay
We are very pleased to be one of the few sites offering fully searchable versions of Cyprien Tanguay’s Dictionnaire Genealogique des Familles Canadiennes. A word of caution, these files are very large and may take a long time to load!
Please note these documents are all in DJVU format; you will need a DJVU plugin for your browser in order to read the texts. For additional information and pointers on using DJVU, see our posting on “Why DJVU and not PDF?“

Bon Jour,
My great-great-uncle was Louis St. Laurent, prime Minister of Canada. I would like to know his family history dating back to the 1600´s.
Hi Colleen, Have you tried checking your family history through some of our Quebec genealogy links on this page: http://www.many-roads.com/link-directory/ ? If you’d like more specific help, please feel free to contact me either via email or via the ManyRoads’ contact form. Bon chance!
I’m using the Caminova DjVu Browser Plug-in (http://www.caminova.net/en/downloads/). It is a free download. It works fine with Mozilla Firefox 4.0.1, and is said to work with a broad range of browsers.
What I really like about this version of Tanguay is that it is fully searchable, unlike, for example, the version at the National Archives of Quebec which is optically very crisp but in an unsearchable PDF image format. The Caminova search function is not defeated by italics and can even handle somewhat broken characters. Also, the speed with which DjVu documents can be displayed, panned, zoomed and otherwise manipulated is without equal.
Thank you, Many Roads, for a really useful research tool!
Hi Thomas, You are welcome. Be aware that there are a few places within our version of Tanguay which are not reliably searchable. Apparently it has to do with the scanned text’s clarity. I tried fixing it to no avail. …mark
Hello Mark
Thank you for placing this tool on your website.
I have used it many time but not with your searchable database.
I have a question that I was hoping you could help me with – there are several footnotes in this collection attached to my ancestors
it simply says “Voy. Vol. 1 p. 387″
would you have any idea what that refers to ?
Any help is appreciated
Chris
Hi Chris: It likely means: see Volume 1 (of the 7) page 387. The texts are sorted by last name into two major sections. First Volume has all last names archive who lived in Quebec up until 1700. The remaining 6 volumes are in alphabetic sequence and include the years 1700 until roughly 1760. Bon chance, mon ami! …mark

What about a francois debien born 1836? I am really stuck here I think someone has the wrong information. This is what I know Frank Debien born 1831-1836 died 1896 in St Regis Falls New York. Came to USA in 1837 was naturalized in 1852 was married in 1853 in Malone New York to a Philomena or Philenda Rousseau/Brooks born 1840. I am stuck as to whom his parents could or should be.
Thank You
Hi Carol, I am not quite sure how you would like me to help. I can tell you that there are Debiens in Tanguay vol 3. beginning at page 260. The last Debien I noticed (without looking really closely died in 1781 , which is typical for his texts). You will need to find source materials to connect your family to the correct branch in Tanguay at about 1750… If you’d like more help, please contact me directly for assistance using our contact form. We are always happy to have new clients …mark
