Hi Mark,
Looking at ancestry.co.uk there are 3 versions of Windows FTM 2012 yet on ancestry.com there are 2 and a downloadable version. Which did you get? on the .co.uk site they only mention the ability to make a website on the most expensive, but is it available throughout. The price on the UK site appears ridiculously inflated when you don’t appear to get the additional tutorial discs.
I commend your post, though it is worth noting you need a Windows licence. I have, like you, used Gramps and I would still recommend keeping it for some of the output options you could use from an imported gedcom. Keep up the good work on the blog

Hello Adrian
I ordered my copy from Amazon.com… it cost less than $40 US with shipping & tax. btw. I also intend to continue using my other tools like Gramps, Rootsmagic etc.

Many thanks Mark, this does infact halve the price which is great news. I am guessing then that your version does not include website generation. Many thanks you have saved me at least £50

You are right Adrian… my copy does not generate a website. As you may be able to tell from this site, lately I have been using Rootsmagic 4 to generate my website formatted data (from a gedcom file).

Hi Mark
I’ve been a RootsMagic user and Ancestry.co.uk subscriber for years. I just decided to try Family Tree Maker 2012 for no other reason than to synch family trees and exchange data with my local database.
My Windows environment is also XP in VirtualBox under a Linux (Mint) host.
FTM installed ok, but unlike your setup, it doesn’t seem to be able to talk to Ancestry – it just keeps putting up a pop-up saying “The website is not accessible at this time.”
I think this must be related to networking somewhere along the line, with something (probably on the FTM side) being blocked from access or simply not visible (to Ancestry).
Did you do anything ‘fancy’ with your network settings to make it all work? I’ve started experimenting with bridging etc, but not getting anywhere yet..
Any help/suggestions gratefully received..
Thanks!
Brian

Hi Brian. No I did not need to do anything fancy with my networking. It worked fine, although I have noticed that there are times when things do not seem to attach to Ancestry.com. When that happens it seems a shutdown-restart of Windows fixes things for me. I hope that helps. …mark
