I believe that the first mystery you list above is not your John Hall. I am also tracking a John Hall from Baltimore, MD who was born in 1740 and later moved to Washington County, NC (later called Sullivan County, NC and then called the State of Franklin) before he eventually moved to Burke County, NC. He would have only been about 17 at the time of the enlistment – which would make the statement “this boy is too young” somewhat accurate. Your John Hall was born in 1732 and chances are would not have been referred to as a ‘boy’ in 1757.
I have no proof for you, but I am thoroughly greatful for your post – since, now I will now have one more document to investigate further for my John Hall. He is an elusive man and this may explain some things (military service, land grants and his relationship with Captain Micajah Merryman) if I can tie it to my research.
Good luck in your search.
